Smoking Popes are a Chicago punk band formed in 1991 by brothers Josh, Matt, and Eli Caterer, known for fusing buzzsaw guitars and caffeinated punk rhythms with Josh Caterer’s smooth, crooning vocals. Their song “Need You Around” reached a wide audience via the Clueless film soundtrack in 1995, and the band went on to open for Green Day before disbanding in 1999 and reuniting in 2005. Their sound—urgent punk with the sophistication of Frank Sinatra—has made them enduring favorites of the pop-punk world.
