The Rebirth Brass Band has been the beating heart of New Orleans brass since 1983, when tuba player Philip Frazier, his brother Keith, and trumpeter Kermit Ruffins started it as Treme high-schoolers. Rebirth took the second-line tradition and fed it funk, hip-hop, and bounce until it became something harder and more danceable, and they have a Grammy and a standing Tuesday-night residency at the Maple Leaf to show for it.
