Melba Liston (1926-1999) was a pioneering American jazz trombonist, arranger, and composer who broke barriers as one of the first women to play trombone professionally in major jazz ensembles. She arranged for Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, and many others, and her sophisticated writing helped shape modern big band jazz.
