The Juilliard String Quartet was founded in 1946 at the Juilliard School and has spent nearly eighty years as America's most consequential quartet, with a roster that has turned over completely but a house style that has not: full-blooded, argumentative, unafraid of dissonance. The original lineup paired violinists Robert Mann and Robert Koff with violist Raphael Hillyer and cellist Arthur Winograd; the group premiered Elliott Carter, recorded the complete Bartok quartets three times, and serves as quartet-in-residence at both Juilliard and the Library of Congress.
