Jessica Lea Mayfield was born in Kent, Ohio, in 1989 and started young, touring with her family's bluegrass band by the age of eight. At fifteen she recorded an EP in her brother's bedroom; a copy reached Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, who produced her first two albums and pulled her in as a guest vocalist on Attack and Release. With Blasphemy So Heartfelt (2008) and Tell Me (2011) established a voice that sounds bored and heartbroken at the same time, and she has since pushed it toward heavier guitar rock on Make My Head Sing... (2014) and Sorry Is Gone (2017), a record about getting out of an abusive marriage.
