Donald Harrison Jr. is a New Orleans alto saxophonist who came up the hard way and the right way, through Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the early 1980s, then co-leading a celebrated quintet with fellow New Orleanian Terence Blanchard. He is equally at home in straight-ahead post-bop, the funk of the reformed Headhunters, and the Mardi Gras Indian tradition he inherited from his father: Harrison is Big Chief of the Congo Square Nation, and his "nouveau swing" fuses second-line rhythm with modern jazz harmony. A gifted mentor as well, he taught a young Christian Scott and Trombone Shorty.
