BASIC is an instrumental trio that locks into long, hypnotic grooves built from guitar, bass, drum machine, samplers and processed percussion, somewhere between art rock, trance jazz and humming electronics. The trio is guitarist Chris Forsyth, Tortoise bassist Douglas McCombs and drummer Mikel Patrick Avery. Much of their 2026 self-titled album was improvised on the spot, and the live sets lean on the same collective improvisation. The name is a nod to Robert Quine and Fred Maher's 1984 album Basic.
