Arturo Sandoval is a Cuban-American trumpeter, pianist and composer, and one of the last living links to the birth of Afro-Cuban jazz. Born outside Havana in 1949, he co-founded Irakere in the 1970s before defecting to the United States in 1990 with the help of his mentor Dizzy Gillespie. He has won ten Grammys and a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the playing still rests on the thing that made his name: an upper register nobody else touches, delivered with full showman's flair.
